Chrysoberyls Gemstone Information
Chrysoberyls are the third hardest naturally occurring gemstone and stand between corundum and topaz on the hardness scale. Chrysoberyl is a mineral consisting of ordinary colorless or yellow transparent Chrysoberyl, Cats Eye Chrysoberyl, and Alexandrite. Ordinary chrysoberyls are a yellowish-green and transparent to translucent in clarity. Chrysoberyl has often been referred to in the literature as chrysolite due to the common olive color of many of its gems, but that name is no longer used in the gemological nomenclature.
Valued for thousands of years, chrysoberyl is a surprising gem that you'll love as much for what it does as for how it looks. Chrysoberyl is an action gem, changing and moving in response to light. In the gem world, special effects are known as phenomena. The gem varieties of chrysoberyl respond to light in surprising ways. For example, one variety of chrysoberyl is color-changing alexandrite, which is red in lamplight and green in daylight. In the entire gem kingdom, no other gem has a color change so dramatic. Chrysoberyl can also be found in a faceted variety, which has a honey-gold to green color. It may remind you of yellow sapphire, topaz, tourmaline, or citrine. But next to the other attention-grabbing varieties, plain faceted chrysoberyl is often overlooked. As a result this gem is surprisingly affordable. Chrysoberyl, no matter its variety, is very durable, with a Mohs hardness of 8.5. It is an excellent gem for everyday wear and perfect for men's rings. Cat's-eyes are especially popular in men's jewelry.

Why Buy Loose Gemstones Instead of Pre-Set Jewelry?
There are many reasons, but mainly it comes down to value and choice...
When buying your Chrysoberyl gemstone loose instead of a pre-set stone, you can be sure that you are getting the best value for your money. Loose gemstones are less expensive, a better value, and you can really see what you are paying for. The most important part of getting the right price and finding the best value is to first see what you're getting. A jewelry setting will hide the inclusions inside a gem, and can deepen or brighten its color. With a loose stone you can much more easily inspect the gem and see it for what it really is. In this way you can get a better idea of its true worth and be sure you are paying a fair price.
The second advantage of buying a loose gemstone is choice. You are free to pick the exact color, cut, shape and variety of the stone for the setting of your dreams, be it yellow gold, white gold, platinum or silver; prong set or bezel set with diamond accents. You can experience the joy of creating your very own, one-of-a-kind jewelry design. Choose from a variety of jewelry settings and styles to create a completely original presentation that will perfectly suit your individual gemstone and will be as unique as you are!

Chrysoberyl is a yellow to greenish-yellow, transparent to translucent, semi-precious version of Alexandrite. Chrysoberyl, like Alexandrite, is a beryllium aluminum oxide. Chrysoberyl is one of the hardest minerals, falling just below corundum (ruby or sapphire), and diamond. Chrysoberyl commonly occurs in granites and granite pegmatites while alexandrite occurs in mica schists. Chrysoberyl occurs in yellow, greenish-yellow, green, and brown. Chrysoberyl is a very hard material, with a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale. Chrysoberyl has distinct cleavage and a vitreous surface luster. Chrysoberyl has a refractive index of 1.745. The refractive index (RI), measured using a refractometer, is an indication of the amount light rays are bent by a mineral. Birefringence is the difference between the minimum and maximum RI. When birefringence is high, light rays reflect off different parts of the back of a stone causing an apparent doubling of the back facets when viewed through the front facet.
Chrysoberyl is normally yellow, yellow-green, or brownish with its color being caused by the presence of iron. Some very rare minty bluish-green chrysoberyls from Tanzania owe their color to the presence of Vanadium. The popular cats eye chrysoberyls come in many nuances between lemon and greenish yellow, and in honey colors and shades from mint green to brownish green, with rich gold colors generally the most valued.
Chrysoberyl is found in shapes such as Ovals, cushions, rounds and emerald cuts. It may remind you of yellow sapphire, topaz, or citrine. Faceted chrysoberyl is transparent, with few visible inclusions.
On account of its golden tones, chrysoberyl is often also associated with wealth.
